Is Pelvic Floor PT Worth It?

Your Questions Answered. What Every Seattle Mom Needs to Know.

Why a Newborn Photographer Is Talking About This

As a Seattle newborn photographer, I get asked about pelvic floor PT Seattle moms can trust all the time… the first days home, the healing body, the beautiful chaos of a brand new baby. And what I’ve learned after eight years behind the lens is that the moms who feel most supported, most present, most like themselves — they didn’t get there alone. They had the right people in their corner.

The Seattle Area Motherhood Series is my way of introducing you to those people. I’m sitting down with the local professionals I trust most — the ones I’d send my own clients, my own friends, my own family to — so you have a go-to list you can actually count on.

First up: Dr. Allison Feldt of Body Motion PT. I’m a pelvic floor PT convert (I carried twins for 40.5 weeks — we’ll get to that), and she’s the person I trust to explain why every postpartum mom in Seattle should have a pelvic floor PT on speed dial. Here’s what she wants you to know.

Pelvic Floor PT: Your Questions Answered

Q: Do I really need pelvic floor PT if I feel fine after having a baby?

A: Most women feel “fine” because their bodies have adapted — compensating through tight hips, low back pain, or just pushing through. Fine doesn’t mean optimal. The goal of pelvic floor PT isn’t just symptom relief. It’s making sure your body is actually working the way it should, so your 40s, 50s, and 60s look the way you want them to.

Q: I thought I was supposed to do Kegels during pregnancy. Is that wrong?

A: For most pregnant women — yes, actually. Most of us are already living in a tight, shortened pelvic floor, not a weak one. Pregnancy, stress, and daily life cause everything to seize up. Doing more Kegels on an already-tight muscle restricts blood flow and reduces the flexibility you need for birth. What actually helps is opening and lengthening the pelvic floor. That’s where real strength comes from.

What to Expect Postpartum

Q: What are the signs of pelvic floor dysfunction that moms ignore?

A: Leaking when you sneeze, jump, or laugh is the obvious one — but most women just accept it as normal mom life. The sneakier signs: back pain that won’t quit no matter how much you stretch, hip tightness that never releases, feeling your quads instead of your glutes when you work out, painful intercourse, and chronic fatigue. That last one surprises people. When your pelvic floor isn’t moving the way it should, your whole body works harder to compensate. So much of that postpartum exhaustion traces back here.

Q: When should I see a pelvic floor PT after having a baby?

A: At Body Motion PT, there’s a complimentary virtual check-in within the first 10 days — just to make sure you’re supported and know what to watch for. Then a full assessment around six to eight weeks postpartum. That’s when the real rebuilding starts: pelvic floor mobility first, then deep core, then glutes, then coordinating it all. If you’re in pain before that six-week mark, don’t wait.

Q: How does my pelvic floor now affect me when I’m older?

A: More than most people realize. A chronically tight pelvic floor means your femur doesn’t move well in the hip socket — so even if you’re working out consistently, you may not be building bone density where you need it most. The care you take now protects you in decades you haven’t reached yet. Dr. Allison has a 90-year-old patient who came in barely walking and now drives herself to appointments. It’s never too late. But earlier is always better.

My Honest Experience with Pelvic Floor PT

I went for the first time because I was leaking on the trampoline. I left with something I didn’t expect — a mental and emotional release I hadn’t been able to find anywhere else. Years of tension stored in my body, from carrying twins, from things that happened long before that, just lifted. I didn’t know that was possible from physical therapy.

That’s exactly why I’m bringing these conversations to you. The things that change us most are often the ones nobody told us to look for.
